Jean Paul Gaultier to Leave Hermes

After 7 years of bringing Hermes from a leather company to a respectable fashion house, Jean Paul Gaultier’s last collection for the French label will be the Spring/Summer 2011 collection. Hermes announced last Thursday that Christophe Lemaire of Lacoste will be taking over as the Artistic Director from the Fall/Winter 2011 collection onwards. It remains to be seen whether Lemaire could fill Gaultier’s shoes but I am pretty excited to see his take on Hermes, a younger, more casual Hermes maybe? Gaultier left Hermes to focus on his own label, of which 45% is owned by Hermes. Hermes’ biggest revenue generator remains its bags and accessories department although the clothes have been garnering rave reviews from the fashion and retail community.

To be fair, Gaultier’s appointment as the Artistic Director of Hermes 7 years ago raised as many eyebrows as Galliano’s appointment by Dior more than a decade ago but it ended up fruitful. Well, the least you could do is to grab all the JPG Birkin you could now. Who knows whether they will discontinue those? Fashionphile has a few pre-owned pieces in stock too, including this beauty in Vert Clemence.

Versace Sculpted Medusa Leather Hobo

What a perfectly sculpted piece of work from Versace! I think this bag is very hot with its perfect balance between bringing back the brand’s 90′s va-va-voom and being current in today’s trend. It is also such an easy bag to pull off so making it a classic material. The sculpted Medusa Hobo is available at Saks for USD1,795.

Marc Jacobs MJ Leather Bag

Marc Jacobs usually names his bags after a girl, whether a supermodel or a movie actress. This bag is an MJ, I am not sure whether that stands for Mary Jane or Marc actually names it after himself. Afterall, this “girl” deserves a bag of his own too. What a beautiful classic bag this is with the glazed leather and croc-embossed trimmings. I am in love with the color and all the details of the bag too. Seems like the HOT Marc Jacobs bags we saw from the Fall 2010 preview are phasing in gradually. The MJ is available at Saks for USD1,495.

Alexander Wang Darcy Slouchy Hobo

It is not easy to follow-up an IT bag without disappointing the lovers but Alexander Wang seems to be doing just fine. The Darcy Hobo is something of a different design with the Rocco hence will not suffer from any direct comparison. There are still the signature studs at the bottom of the bag like the Rocco. The Rocco was generally criticized as being being too slouchy and losing its shape due to the heavy bottom (that sounds like something else) but with the Darcy Slouchy Hobo, hey, it is meant to be slouchy anyway so I will say it is an improvement. If the size is big enough, I won’t mind carrying it too. Available at Saks for USD850 now.

Salma Hayek Wore the First Gucci Couture Dress

There are certainly perks being the wife of Francois Henri Pinault and being the first to wear Gucci first couture dress should be in the top 5, if not tops the list. Frida Gianini has planned to launch the Gucci Premiere service since the beginning of the year to cater for the growing demand of red carpet walkers on Gucci special creations. The debut dress is a one-shoulder burgundy drape and train, which I think Salma carries very well on the Cannes Film Festival red carpet on the 14th May 2010. The dress was eventually donated and auctioned out for a charity cause at $22,000. About the price it would command should you want to get a similar service from Gucci.

Gucci will not join the lineup of couture houses on the Couture fashion show at this point of time. Most couture houses make losses on this department anyway so why join the crowds if Gucci can already make nice profits and command a brand presence without a couture arm?

By the way, Gucci seems to be reducing its sales lately, including the usual extra 10% at Takashimaya Singapore that is coming the day after tomorrow. It seems like the new management is cleaning up the brand image.

John Galliano Newspaper Print Bag

John Galliano made his marks in the 90s by making the newspaper print dresses for Dior which caused a craze around town and fashion community. Carrie Bradshaw famously wore one of the dresses in an episode of the season 3 of SATC. The newspaper print has since disappeared from Dior looks but remains John Galliano’s signature look. I am not sure it is still the chicest and coolest look now that we are in the 21st century but for a nostalgic reason (and perhaps also because the SATC girls are coming back in the silver screen, older and not cheesy, I hope), this bag somehow comes across pretty interesting to me. At EUR373, it is not exactly cheap but quite a fun white bag to tote around town in summer like now.
