Yay or Nay? – Gucci Medium Carry-on Duffel

Will you buy this Gucci bag if you have SGD15,000 to spare? Gucci has a special place in my heart but  with 15 grands, I could have landed my hand on a nice Hermes Birkin 40cm, pre-owned with mint condition and made entirely of leather and it would have been a smarter investment. Yes, I can see this bag is made of croc skin but at least 50% of the whole bag is still made of jacquard fabric. Also, for a bag that is of its price and looking like a Birkin, doesn’t it deserve at least a name?

Gucci Textured Leather Briefcase

White briefcases are tricky to pull off for a man so it is best to be avoided but some bags are so impressive, it is worth taking the risk. This textured leather bag from Gucci is modern, stylish and not boring at all for a briefcase but not too over-the-top for a white bag. The texture of the leather is neat too, making it looks prim and proper. Priced at USD1,790, it is not a cheap bag but it is one of the best Gucci man bags I have seen recently.

Salvatore Ferragamo Venna Vintage Messenger

Not all messenger bags are created equally. By nature, it is a more relax bag but if it should work with professionals too to stretch its value. Then again, most messenger bags that work for work are mostly rigid and structured which might not work for more relaxed occasions. This Ferragamo Venna messenger is quite a good balance between work and play. The leather has been distressed to give out that vintage vibe which equals character. I can imagine this being worn with both tee and jeans and shirt and tie. Price is USD1,600 from Neiman Marcus.

Ben Minkoff Gregger Leather Tote

This is freaking exciting! Rebecca Minkoff’s debut collection for men, Ben Minkoff (named after her grandfather who was a fighter pilot in the WWII) does not disappoint at all. In fact, it seems like it would be a hit when it finally hits the stores, not only with the guys but with the girls, for some of the pieces. The Gregger full leather tote is without doubt the best piece. Admittedly, it looks as cool as one of the military-inspired Burberry totes a few seasons back. The thing is, the Burberry bag costs around SGD3,000 whereas this one is under SGD700. This handsome tote is also available in the fabric version but it is obviously nowhere close to as cool as this one here. Man bags are slowly become an integral part of a man’s collection and as a purseholic, it just means more excitements coming our way.

Merry Christmas, people! Enjoy the holiday!

Loewe Formal Briefcase 2 Bellows

I am not a briefcase kind of guy but this Loewe kicks the back out of all the briefcases I have ever come across with in my lifetime. Look at the colors available for this season! Aren’t they awesome or what? At EUR990 for such a handsome briefcase, it is perfectly a justifiable man bag to own.

Christmas Gift Ideas for Men

It is the time of the year where everyone is shopping for his / her loved ones. Ladies, if have any trouble finding a gift for that most important man in your life, here might be some appropriate ideas to choose from.

Let’s admit it. There are not many things out there to beat this baby with as THE gift of the year for your man. Trust me on this! The ipad is available at your nearest Apple store or online store with free engraving and shipping. Price starts from USD499 to USD829. The Apple ipad case is priced at USD39.

Just in case your man has got himself an ipad, it does not mean you could not do anything about it. There are in fact many choices for ipad case out there from our favorite designers at the moment, such as Gucci, Vuitton and Burberry. Then again, not all the designer ipad cases were created equally. Out of the lot, Tod’s has emerged to be the best, simply because the it is the only one convertible to a reclining seat, perfect for typing like the Apple ipad case itself. Price starts from USD495 for the full calfskin option while the full alligator skin option is USD4,900.

Now for other ideas not related to ipad at all if it is beginning to drive you nuts. Every man needs at least one sharply tailored cardigan. 100% wool is great but cash(mere) it if you could. I am loving this beautiful classic button front cardigan from Maison Martin Margiela Line 14. Price is USD900 at Barneys.

An old saying goes “A pen is mightier than a sword”. Regardless of what paperless technology has become, there is always something gentlemanly about taking notes on a piece of paper out of a leather folder like this one from Coach. Price is USD298.

Lastly, how about a new briefcase from Bottega Veneta? Price is USD1,980 but is currently on 20% off at bluefly.com.

Askme – Bag, Shoes and Watch for a Doctor

Dear Purseholic

I am a doctor, starting my own practice soon and looking for a nice designer bag, shoes and watch suitable for my profession. I am a 30-year old male, 182cm and I like stylish stuff but suitable for my age. My budget is not more than S$4,000 for the bag, S$1,000 for the shoes and S$10,000 for the watch. I am not a big shopper so I would prefer classic models to last me for a long time. Appreciate your advice.

Jonathan, Singapore

Hi Jonathan

A doctor with a private practice and SGD1,5000 shopping spree? You are one lucky dude and object of jealousy to many men.

Anyways, I will try my best to do my job. For a bag, how about a full leather doctor’s bag from Gucci with the signature webbing? Not only that it suits your profession perfectly, it exudes style, class, timelessness and is appropriate for a 30-year old. The price is well under your SGD4,000 budget too at around SGD3,300 from Saks.

For shoes, I would recommend a pair of classic lace-up cap toe Balmoral from Berluti, if you could stretch your budget. The small Berluti store at Ngee Ann City is one of the best places for a gentleman to visit in Singapore. Be prepared to spend around SGD2,000 for this baby here. Alternatively, a pair from Gucci or Ferragamo will fit your under SGD1,000 budget well too.

Lastly, a great timepiece is probably the most important accessory for a man so it is crucial to get this one right. Based on your under SGD10,000 budget and your 182cm height, I would narrow down your choices to a classic Rolex Datejust II (USD7,950), a Jaeger LeCoultre Reverso Grande Automatique (USD8,950) or a Glashutte Original Senator Panorama Date (USD8,800). I would get one of these three watches myself. Prices are before discounts.

All the best for your private practice, doctor!
