Hybridizing two of its most iconic bags to create a new one could either be a big hit or big miss for a bag company. For Mulberry Heritage, it looks like a hit. The Heritage seems to have inherited all the best attributes of both the Bayswater and Alexa and makes a perfect every day bag. Price is EUR988 at Luisaviaroma.com. I actually prefer this to both the Bayswater and Alexa myself, which is something considering that I was a big Bayswater fan when it first came out.

Why do the old times look so good today? Take this Mulberry Polly Push Lock leather bag which is inspired by the the style of 70s, for example; people call it beautiful, vintage-inspired and all today but in the 70s, all bags did look like this so there was nothing really special. Kate Middleton made a good choice with this bag for her trip to Canada last month and it is a miracle this bag is still not sold out yet. Price is GBP850 from net-a-porter.com.

The Hottest Bags of 2010

Geez… do you realize that we are closing the year 2010 in just about two weeks’ time? This is one year I feel I have not achieved anything really significant compared to the past few years. I bought my own place last year, I have not even got my driving license this year! Where did the time go, really? Anyway, year end is always somehow depressing and that’s why the Holidays season is so important to distract us away from all those numbing questions about what did not do.

The year 2010 has not exactly been a great year for bags either but these 5 hot bags, “It” or NOT that “It”, they saved the bags industry from being stagnant. Here they are…

1. Mulberry Alexa

The Bayswater might have placed Mulberry on the map but it is the Alexa that has made the brand “It” . The bag detached the brand from its “classic” (read: “older”) image it has been both blessed and cursed with. This baby is one of the most imitated bags this year and seems to be making its way to be Mulberry’s classic bag alongside the Bayswater itself. Price starts from EUR820.

2. Fendi Peekaboo

Fendi is the only mega design house that managed to create an “It” bag this year. Dubbed as the undone Birkin of Fendi when it first came out, Fendi seems determined to make it the house’s classic. Price starts from EUR1,000.

3. Alexander Wang Rocco Bag

The Alexander Wang Rocco is the most edgy bag created this year. Although I am more fond of the Darcy hobo, being the first bag from the designer does count. I am still waiting for the man bag version (like 40cm wide or a little bigger) of the Rocco but it is already an “It” and classic bag by now so it might happen one day. Price starts from EUR835.

4. Celine Box Bag

Celine is THE comeback brand of the year with Phoebe Philo as the creative helms woman of the house. The Box bag might be small in size but it is responsible for bringing back the vintage inspired small handbag to trend. Price starts from USD3,100.

5. Celine Luggage Bag

Having created not only one but two hottest bags in a year is a testament to the significance of the force that is Phoebe Philo in Celine. The luggage bag is now THE bag of Celine. It seems like ages ago that the Boogie was once the iconic bag of the house of Celine. I hope Phoebe Philo will resurface the Boogie again one day but for now, let the luggage bag shine and be the icon. Price starts from USD1,100.

Mulberry Bayswater Ostrich with Teapot

How do you up the ante with a Ostrich skin version of an already iconic bag? Mulberry fixes mini tea pots on the bag. Do not ask me why teapots, I guess they are just cute and the British basically loves tea so that’s why. This obviously rare and statement piece is priced at GBP4,000 at Mulberry stores. I am not sure whether the teapot bits work more as an upgrade or as a damage to the bag. I guess we just wait and see whether it sells well.

Mulberry Daria Drawstring Tote

Can you imagine how chic this bag is for a casual brunch and shopping over the weekend? It is one of the most exciting bags I have seen from Mulberry in a long time after the almighty Bayswater and Alexa so there is no reason why the Daria does not get a place in the line-up of Mulberry’s most iconic bags. Available online or at your nearest Mulberry stores, the Daria is priced at GBP795.

Mulberry Oliver Computer Bag

Men, are you tired and embarrassed by your nylon computer bag? The fact of life is, you should be if it were not at least, Tumi. Fret not since there is a cool bag that is still manly enough and does not come from big names like Louis Vuitton, Gucci or Prada which some of you find threatening your masculinity. Mulberry is a respected British brand with strong leather heritage and this computer bag looks more like a classic piece of work. The price is also reasonable at USD1,195, if you are looking for a quality bag to last you for years and looking classy, look no further!

Mulberry Alexa Bag

It is official that the Mulberry Alexa bag is now the IT bag. Some people might have mistaken that the bag took reference from the Proenza Schouler PS1 bag but it is actually a spin-off from the house’s popular Bayswater, inspired by Alexa Chung’s style. In this yellow color, the bag attracts sightings and attention in the store displays and being carried. My sisters and I went shopping last week and we were stopped by it when we passed by the Mulberry store at the Hilton hotel, Singapore. Unfortunately, we decided not to inspect the bag in person as out of the four sales staff who manned the store that day, all just looked at us awkwardly without anyone taking the initiative to address us or offer to show the bag. Club 21 who brings Mulberry to Singapore should take note that no matter how much you spend on window display and marketing, your sales staff could make or break an image in 10 seconds. The bag just reminds me of the face of the four sales staff now and nothing else. I can’t help it.

Mulberry Alexa Satchel Oversize

The Alexa satchel is a vintage-inspired bag design. I am digging the bag as a messenger and the size is pretty big too at 42cmx32cmx22cm. The bag is made in the UK, fully in Buffalo leather and knowing Mulberry, the bag is worth the price tag of EUR833.33 inclusive of shipping to most countries in the world. My only reservation is the closure mechanism which is perfect as a messenger but too much hassle when toted. Love the blue and gold color combo on this bag! Mulberry Shimmy Tote

The design of Mulberry Shimmy might not be as unique as one would have expected but it is simply beautiful. This colour (Cerise) is perfect to compensate for the shortage of styling and decorations of the bag. My sis is looking for a convertible bag with messenger strap. This would make a good choice. Available at Mulberry stores or upscale department stores for GBP595.
