Which One to Go With: Glashutte Original or Jaeger LeCoultre?

The world of Haute horology is as addictive to explore as the world of Haute fashion and leather goods.  Having owned my first decent watch, it is just natural to keep eying for the possible candidate for my second timepiece. After some research, I have narrowed my choices down to either Glashutte Original Senator Sixties Chronograph or Jaeger LeCoultre Reverso Squadra Chrono GMT. Both houses pride themselves with their own in-house movements, well respected by horology lovers, even including the purist. Undoubtedly, I have to give it to JLC when it comes to heritage but GO being a smaller company, also means that their timepieces are more exclusive. On the other hand, the Reverso is one of the most iconic designs in the world of watches, rivaling the likes of Calatrava of Patek Philippe or Royal Oak of Audemars Piguet. It is going to be a tough call and I don’t mind waiting til I am sure which one to go with. What do you think and which one do you prefer?

Askme – Bag, Shoes and Watch for a Doctor

Dear Purseholic

I am a doctor, starting my own practice soon and looking for a nice designer bag, shoes and watch suitable for my profession. I am a 30-year old male, 182cm and I like stylish stuff but suitable for my age. My budget is not more than S$4,000 for the bag, S$1,000 for the shoes and S$10,000 for the watch. I am not a big shopper so I would prefer classic models to last me for a long time. Appreciate your advice.

Jonathan, Singapore

Hi Jonathan

A doctor with a private practice and SGD1,5000 shopping spree? You are one lucky dude and object of jealousy to many men.

Anyways, I will try my best to do my job. For a bag, how about a full leather doctor’s bag from Gucci with the signature webbing? Not only that it suits your profession perfectly, it exudes style, class, timelessness and is appropriate for a 30-year old. The price is well under your SGD4,000 budget too at around SGD3,300 from Saks.

For shoes, I would recommend a pair of classic lace-up cap toe Balmoral from Berluti, if you could stretch your budget. The small Berluti store at Ngee Ann City is one of the best places for a gentleman to visit in Singapore. Be prepared to spend around SGD2,000 for this baby here. Alternatively, a pair from Gucci or Ferragamo will fit your under SGD1,000 budget well too.

Lastly, a great timepiece is probably the most important accessory for a man so it is crucial to get this one right. Based on your under SGD10,000 budget and your 182cm height, I would narrow down your choices to a classic Rolex Datejust II (USD7,950), a Jaeger LeCoultre Reverso Grande Automatique (USD8,950) or a Glashutte Original Senator Panorama Date (USD8,800). I would get one of these three watches myself. Prices are before discounts.

All the best for your private practice, doctor!

Linde Werdelin The One

This is the one on the tip of all experts’ tongues I have spoken to when it comes to heavy-duty rubber strap watches over the past few months. The new kids on the block seem to have caused quite a storm in the world of Haute Horology and it has now reached Asia. I was quite stuck with either Bell & Ross Instrument or the Perrelet Turbine for my sports watch next but this shakes the game considerably. You can get Linde Werdelin watches in Singapore via E’COLLEZIONE at the Mandarin Gallery, Orchard Road. The One starts from SGD6,800 before discounts but Jeffrey Leong from the store is willing to make a great offer to sweeten the deal. The deal so sweet it seems like Bell & Ross and Perrelet are not that worth the money anymore. Is this  the ONE when the time comes? Decision… decision….

Chopard Happy Animal Watch

Here are for you if you love animals so much and are somehow obsessed with rubber watches that the price tag of USD4,900 on these Quartz watches seems justifiable to you. I love expensive tongue-on-cheek items once in a while and if I have the money to spare but these watch are just a slap on one’s intelligence.

Zenith Elite Ultra Thin Dress Watch

This Zenith, IMO is one of the best looking dress watches I have seen in a while. I adore its simplicity and classic elegance yet the details such as the second indicator and arrows in place of traditional numeric signs give a new spin and make it fascinating.

Zenith is one of those watch companies that have its share of hits and misses. I am not 100% sure in which category this baby falls into but it is a hit to me, based on its looks. True to its name, the ultra thin is pretty thin at only 7.6mm, which is essential for a dress watch. Price is USD3,900 before discounts. It is relatively affordable for a classic watch.

Perrelet Turbine in Stainless Steel Color

Oh man… I can’t seem to divert my attention elsewhere but this over-the-top gorgeous Perrelet Turbine. I was obsessed with the black and orange version but this stainless steel version is just bad bad-ass. This version is USD850 cheaper than the black and orange version I featured before but at USD5,000 before discounts, it will still take some time for me to splurge on this baby.

Ralph Lauren Stirrup Watch Collection

Ralph Lauren is the most recent big fashion designer who ventured into the world of high-end watches. It is indeed not exactly a big surprise seeing how well Chanel, Dior, Fendi, Gucci and Ferragamo have been doing with their watch collections over the years. And so, Ralph dived in too.

My favorite thing about Ralph Lauren is his ability to inject the classic American touch into something new and it becomes an instant classic. The Stirrup collection is, IMO, the most distinct among the three collections Ralph launched in his premier. This is simply due to its equestrian equipment shape, something Ralph Lauren (the brand) has always been closely associated with.

Contrary to the stigma that watches from fashion designers are just nice packaging with cheap off-the-rack ETA movement inside, Ralph Lauren watches run on either Piaget or Jaeger-LeCoultre house movements so it is really something worth looking into. Prices start from USD8,800.

The Little Lange 1 Moonphase

Ladies mostly appreciate watches more from its aesthetic point-of-view but watches from A. Lange & Sohne were made to serve beyond that so one of the best watches you could get for that most important woman in your life (if money were never an issue) will be this gorgeous baby. The reason? It is a watch that a Queen might be caught wearing. Everything screams “Royal” about this watch; from its royally blue color, the diamonds, exotic stingray skin strap and blue mother of pearl dial to the “magical” details that make the hands move and provide the basic duty a watch is supposed to. This piece of art costs USD52,000 before discounts. I said if money were never an issue, didn’t I?
