Prada Saffiano Tote

Over the past few seasons, Prada has been banking on its Saffiano leather line of bags to make sweet success and it seems to be a great move. Prada Saffiano is one of the most iconic leather choices in the market. It is classic, tough and highly scratch resistant, which means low maintenance. This particular model was originally released only in Hong Kong and some other countries in Asia to commemorate the Prada IPO launch earlier this year. Due to its success, the bag is now in Prada’s resort 2012 line-up. I have tried on this bag myself and boy… I love it! The bag comes with a detachable shoulder strap, which comes in really handy. The bag is now available in many colors to choose from: pink, grey, black and gold among few. Price is USD1,810 at Neiman Marcus.

Prada Galleria Bag

Named after its landmark store at Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Milan, the Prada Galleria bags might just become Prada’s most iconic bag. Despite constantly being one of the, if not the most respected Italian fashion house, Prada never really had an iconic bag in its collection.

The Galleria bag does have all attributes of an iconic bag – timeless design, simplistic but unique shape and could be reincarnated in various materials and colors season after season. True enough, I have seen this bag being toted more than any other Prada bags since its first launch a few months back. This is  clearly a good sign of success.

The standard issue comes in Prada’s signature Saffiano leather, price starts from USD1,560. I have “played” with the Ostrich version in Prada store a while ago and boy… it was divine with its SGD13,000 price tag. Both the croc and ostrich versions are available on made to order basis. Price for the croc version starts from EUR23,000. Love it? I am lusting over it!

Prada Spring/Summer 2012 Bags

The “timeless” move that has re-emerged over the past few seasons due to the gloomy economic condition will drive the fashion industry to its grave sooner than later. While it is good news for houses like Hermes, Balenciaga and Chanel to continue leveraging on its classic pieces only by coming up with new colors, Miuccia Prada has proven yet again that it had to be her to lift the whole industry out from the state of flux. Yes, we are all aware that year 2012 is not going to be good news for European economy so people have to start shopping and dressing up in trend again to turn it around! You see those very seasonal pieces up there on Prada runway? Yep, be ready to shelf your classic Birkins, Chanel flaps and Balenciagas because you will need a new trendy bags come this Spring and the bags from Prada seem perfect!

Longchamp-inspired Prada Bag?

Seriously?? I mean I really love Longchamp Le Pliage and regard it as the most accessible semi designer bag that does not look cheap but for Prada to copy it is just incomprehensible to me. Prada has slacked lately and been producing cheap colorful nylon bags which are good as crowd pleasers but it is about time the brand will get diluted if they keep going down this road. Will you pay a Longchamp-lookalike Prada bag for 10 times the Longchamp price? I will NEVER. Price is SGD1,450 in Singapore.

Prada Python Skin Double Top Handle Bag

When you have a piece of skin python in beautiful color like this as the material, there is no wonder the end product in the form of a bag could end up this beautiful. Admittedly the design of the bag is not really that original (kinda like a briefcase, if you ask me). Price is around SGD5,000, which is OK for a python bag but now my big question is – if you have five grands to spend on a python bag, would you spend it on this Prada or the custom-made Tod’s D-bag I featured last week? Hmm…

Askme – Classic Prada Bag

Dear Purseholic

I want a bag from Prada which design is unique to Prada and is a classic. Which design would you recommend? My budget is not more than $1000 so I think I will settle with a nylon bag.

Carole, NYC

Dear Carole

The good news is you could get a nice Prada nylon bag for USD690 now but if you want a truly classic Prada bag then you need to prepare to stretch your budget by another USD200 yet I really think it will be worth it. The Gaufre bags, especially the east/west satchel from Prada has been its classic and is one of the best classic bags from any big luxury name that does not cost arms and legs. Of course the calfskin version is divine but the nylon version is nothing less than splendid either. It is available now in the classic black, grey and navy blue. You can’t really go wrong with any of these three colors. Price is USD1,195.

Prada to Go IPO in Hong Kong

Classic Prada Gaufre Nappa leather tote for USD1,995

After several failed attempts in the past to go public in Milan a few years back, Prada is said to have received the approval from Hong Kong Stock Exchange to go for IPO and is expected to raise about USD2Billion by selling one fifth stake of the company to the public. With China and Asia being the fastest growing market for luxury goods, it makes a perfect sense to assume that more European luxury companies will want to be closer to the market in one way or another.  I am happy with this development but I hope Prada does not fall into the trap of pursuing cheaper labor alternative too much. After all, when I buy a Prada, I want the Italian craftsmanship that goes into it.

Pre-owned Prada Alligator Doctor Bag

When there are limited exciting new bags to talk about, it is time to turn to good condition pre-owned bags. Like watches or dresses, vintage bags have become more and more popular, especially those in classic design and limited edition. This hot ruby red Prada alligator doctor bag is a perfect example of a great pre-loved bag that could become a staple piece in your wardrobe. Price is steep at USD4,000 but it should have retailed at at least USD8,000 when new. Avaiable at fashionphile.com.

Prada Canapa Azulejos Tote

I am a fan of canvas bags in general but not the Prada Canapa bags which have been gaining popularity lately due to its low price for a Prada bag. If you look closely at the bag, you will find that there is no single decent piece of leather on the bag (so much for a leather good), which explains the low price point so this bag is all about the brand and that is indeed very NOT Prada. I have no idea what came across Miuccia’s mind when approving the Canapas to go for production and sale. I just hope it sells out soon and that the house of Prada had stopped the production sooner.

Just in case I have to buy a Canapa bag, for whatever reason, there is only one I will likely consider and it is this particular Canapa Azujelos. Paying tribute to the traditional Spanish tiling arts, this bag is printed with a beautiful artwork instead of the Prada logo. Will I buy this? NO, unless under a life-threatening condition. Price is SGD1,150 but currently down to SGD965 at www.reebonz.com. Sign up and grab it if you go gaga over the Canapa. It will be gone in exactly one day and 14 hours.

Prada Madras Flap Bag

This Prada bag has been lingering on my radar ever since I first saw it months ago. There is indeed nothing I am not loving about this baby and I believe it is a great investment piece to put your money in. Available in two choices of color combo – while the dark and light brown combo is classic and easy to match, it is still the black and orange combo that steals the show. Think of it as a delicate balance between structured power bag with intricate leather wove and exciting color showcase that is not overly trendy. One more thing that I like about this bag is its leather lining. Like my beloved Prada Saffiano Antik bag, I am sure this bag smells additively amazing too. Price is GBP1,595. Good price for a great bag, I must say.
