Askme – Best Bags to Buy Now

Dear Purseholic

I am 48 years old, just recently got out of my 25-year marriage which with the exception of my two gorgeous boys (23 and 20), has turned out to be a complete waste of my life. I used to have many passions in life, including fashion and dressing up but had been paying very little attention to it for the past ten years due to the horrible marriage. To cut the long story short, let’s just say I managed to get out of it with a good settlement and I would really like to put my own life together again. This will involve me hanging out a lot more often with many ladies who lunch therefore I will need a wardrobe overhaul. Most of the bags in my collection are from the late 80s and 90s. I have mostly classic Chanel, Hermes, LV, Gucci and Fendi bags but I need new statement bags that are age appropriate yet current (I want to be seen fresh and current). Would you be kind enough to recommend at least 5 good models and some new designer names for me to keep my eyes on?

Best Wishes

Mandy (not real name), NYC

Dear Mandy (not real name)

Thanks for writing to us. Welcome back to life! You have certainly missed out many exciting bags over the past 10 years but I will try to fill you in. Some new and current brands to watch our for are Meredith Wendell, The Row, Victoria Beckham and Reed Krakoff. At the same time, some older brands which were hot back prior to or in the 1980s such as Celine, Nina Ricci, Givenchy, Valextra and Delvaux have recently re-emerged too. Besides the two groups, some heritage brands made a come back in the past decade, offering new classic pieces worthy of your consideration such as the Balenciaga Giant City, YSL Muse and Muse Two, Hermes Lindy and Tod’s D Bag. Here are the top 5 bags I recommend you getting immediately. They will be approved adored by most of your “ladies-who-lunch” friends and frenemies alike.

1. Victoria Beckham Structured leather tote, USD3,750 from net-a-porter.com in this beautiful Merlot color. Think of Victoria Beckham bags as the new Hermes/Valextra. They are new, incredibly posh and classy.

2. Hermes Lindy 30 or 35, price starts from USD7,000. Because Birkin and Kelly bags represent the old wealth while the Lindy represents the new. The Lindy is very versatile too, can go from casual to more formal events. We have one available now!

3. The Row Metal Frame Lizard Clutch, USD5,800 from net-a-porter.com. In your circle, showing support to new young talents is very important, no? On top of that, the clutch is super gorgeous too!

4. Reed Krakoff Bridle two-tone-leather tote, USD1,190, exclusive at the net-a-porter.com. Simply because it looks effortlessly chic and  stylish. The snakeskin version is even more delicious, if you wish to up the ante.

5. Finally, a Balenciaga City bag in either the classic version (if you want it light) or the Giant version (if you want it glamorous but heavy). Easily because the bag can be packed flat for traveling, it is really versatile and is one of the , if not, the greatest bag created in the past decade. Price is USD1,445 for the classic version and USD1,795 for the Giant version. Available in many beautiful colors season after season.

Please do not stop at here. You owe it to yourself to get as many gorgeous bags as you could afford. I say, the Luggage and the Box bag from Celine must be included in your list next. They are divine!

xoxo

Celine New Boogie Bag

Phoebe Philo’s reign in Celine is probably the best thing ever happened to the brand since its establishment but I have always sort of resented her decision to clean the house’s iconic Boogie bag out of her line-up.  Having said that, I had always had a feeling that it would be back one day and that Philo would update the bag, making it look as iconic as always yet current and gorgeous. Imagine how both excited and disappointed  I felt when I first saw the New Boogie. The New Boogie still retains its predecessor’s iconic short, wide look with open top but Philo has cleaned it up, taking the structure (which, unfortunately, I love about Boogie) away and given it her signature treatments all over. It is nowhere near a bad bag and I am sure it will grow on people due to its timeless appeal (I like it more now than when I first saw it). I just hope Philo will not stop reinventing the Boogie here. Price is USD1,709 at styledrops.com and is available in both black and cuir (natural leather) color in deer skin. From what I know, the price in Europe is only EUR975.

Celine Resort 2012

This picture was tweeted by Elle Creative Director, Joe Zee and we should all have known by know how out-of-the-worldly anticipated it is. I never see any Celine luggage bag in its Singapore boutique anymore and only two or three pieces each in dull colors in its HK boutiques. You see them in neon colors in this picture? I am glad colors are all over this season and will still be by next year. The question is, who will be the lucky people getting their hands on those colors? The luggage seems to be even more challenging to get than the Hermes Birkin nowadays! There might be a chance if you call your boutique now to pre-order.

Celine Phantom Luggage

For you haters who complain that the Celine luggage is too rigid, Celine took out all the structures of the bag and let it slouch in the Phantom. Straight from the look book for their Fall 2011 collection, the Phantom will be the new reinterpretation of the iconic luggage. Do I love it? I am not sure since the thing that attracts me to the luggage to begin with is its rigid structure. This bag is like a hybrid between the original luggage and Balenciaga motorcycle bag, especially with the tassels. The Phantom will be available from July 2011 onwards.

Askme – Hottest Bag to Buy Now

Hi Purseholic

I am buying my first real designer handbags (a bag and a clutch) and would like to get from respected brands but ones that do not scream logos all over. My budget is not over S$5000 for both. I like bags from Hermes but they are beyond my budget. Are bags from YSL and Dior good bet?

Melissa

Hi Melissa

I applaud you for acknowledging the importance of buying a clutch as well as a bag as it shows that you know that is definitely NOT OK to bring a big bag to an evening event even if it is a Million Dollar bag. Having said that, given your generous budget for a first bags (I wish I had that amount for my first), you are in for many sweet deals.

From left: Celine luggage bag, Tod’s restyled D bag and Loewe Amazona bag

I assume you are working so your bag has to go from work to play seamlessly. If you want cool designer bags with the same vein as of Hermes’, I say you go with Celine, Tod’s or Loewe. The Celine luggage bag in small would be perfect for daily bag and it a classic, alongside the Tod’s restyled D bag and the Loewe Amazona. These bags are now available in many varieties of  size, material and color and I have featured pictures of the bags in action above. You could get one of these babies under SGD3,000 in Singapore. Do choose a darker shade of colors so it could be a keeper.

YSL chYc Clutch

As for the clutch, with almost SGD2,000 budget to spare, there are plenty choices to choose from. YSL has been making great clutches lately and my sis bought one in hot lipstick red shade a few months back. The chYc clutch is a great choice if you like something classic with a touch of chicness, as the name suggests.  It is priced slightly under SGD1,000 at Saks.com before shipping but should be over one grand in Singapore boutique. Alternatively, the classic Ferragamo Gancini clutch is also a sure-win bet.

Do not refrain from buying online if the price is better significantly even after shipping and the 7% GST. If you make your choices carefully, you might still end up with over one grand to spare. I suggest you put that extra money into a Louis Vuitton Speedy or Neverfull in Damier Canvas Ebene (since you are avoiding logo screams). It will work well under wet days and when you want a lightweight, low-maintenance bag for a change.

Happy shopping!

The Hottest Bags of 2010

Geez… do you realize that we are closing the year 2010 in just about two weeks’ time? This is one year I feel I have not achieved anything really significant compared to the past few years. I bought my own place last year, I have not even got my driving license this year! Where did the time go, really? Anyway, year end is always somehow depressing and that’s why the Holidays season is so important to distract us away from all those numbing questions about what did not do.

The year 2010 has not exactly been a great year for bags either but these 5 hot bags, “It” or NOT that “It”, they saved the bags industry from being stagnant. Here they are…

1. Mulberry Alexa

The Bayswater might have placed Mulberry on the map but it is the Alexa that has made the brand “It” . The bag detached the brand from its “classic” (read: “older”) image it has been both blessed and cursed with. This baby is one of the most imitated bags this year and seems to be making its way to be Mulberry’s classic bag alongside the Bayswater itself. Price starts from EUR820.

2. Fendi Peekaboo

Fendi is the only mega design house that managed to create an “It” bag this year. Dubbed as the undone Birkin of Fendi when it first came out, Fendi seems determined to make it the house’s classic. Price starts from EUR1,000.

3. Alexander Wang Rocco Bag

The Alexander Wang Rocco is the most edgy bag created this year. Although I am more fond of the Darcy hobo, being the first bag from the designer does count. I am still waiting for the man bag version (like 40cm wide or a little bigger) of the Rocco but it is already an “It” and classic bag by now so it might happen one day. Price starts from EUR835.

4. Celine Box Bag

Celine is THE comeback brand of the year with Phoebe Philo as the creative helms woman of the house. The Box bag might be small in size but it is responsible for bringing back the vintage inspired small handbag to trend. Price starts from USD3,100.

5. Celine Luggage Bag

Having created not only one but two hottest bags in a year is a testament to the significance of the force that is Phoebe Philo in Celine. The luggage bag is now THE bag of Celine. It seems like ages ago that the Boogie was once the iconic bag of the house of Celine. I hope Phoebe Philo will resurface the Boogie again one day but for now, let the luggage bag shine and be the icon. Price starts from USD1,100.

Fall 2010 Bag Preview

Singapore is not a bad place to live in except for the weather which is either hot and humid or raining. Can’t it just be, for once, nice? Yet before I get attacked by readers who would kill for weather like Singapore’s, I am not complaining, just pondering. Anyway, now that the summer is around, Fall 2010 bags are up for preview too. There are some new creations which is excellent remembering that designers have been pretty lazy for the past few seasons just playing variations on their existing design.

Celine Large Shopper Tote

I am a sucker for vintage and vintage-inspired stuff and so Celine by Phoebe Philo first collection is irresistible to me. Look at this beautiful shopper with vintage-inspired leather trims and the emblem print on the fabric. I am floored… Available at the nearest Celine stores for around SGD1,400.
