Askme – RL Ricky Crocodile Bag

Hi Purseholic

I would like to have your opinion on the Ralph Lauren Ricky Crocodile Bag. I really like the one in brown but some of my friends advised me against it as it looks too much like the Hermes Birkin. Is it a bag you will buy?

Hi Madeline

There are two types of Hermes Birkin look-alike; the rare good ones and the lousy ones. The Ricky happens to fall into the category of the rare good ones. The Hermes Birkin bag is indeed a modified version of the HAC, which was inspired by vintage saddle carriers. The design of RL Ricky was inspired by vintage Cooper saddle carriers so there is no denying there is a close resemblance and one can always correctly argue that Ralph had indeed copied the Birkin design to capture the left-over market (aka the people who can not get the Birkins. Then again, nowadays, if you have the money, why can’t you?). If this bothers you, I suggest, do not buy the Ricky and put your money on an Hermes Birkin in normal leather or double/triple it for the croc version instead.

If, however, you can get pass the argument above, look at the bag by itself and the legacy of the house of Ralph Lauren, I suggest you get it now before the price increases furthermore. At USD16,995, there is no way you would get an Italy-made, full croc skin bag from a respected designer like RL. Besides, RL is now the only thing America has to rival European luxury giants like Prada, Gucci, Chanel, Dior and to some extent, Hermes itself.  Being an American, you should be proud to wear a RL bag, especially one that is so tastefully made.

Your friends might argue and put their opinion across but when you place your croc Ricky in front of them, they could not help by be wowed. Trust me since I had been there and converted once I have seen, touched and smelled one. The Ricky croc is a real deal.

From the lower line of Ralph Lauren, the Lauren Chatsworth Vachetta Hobo is crafted in lush pebbled vachetta leather and accented with highly polished hardware. This baby hobo is clearly designed for chic style but the elegant ruched detailing and the buckle just adds some classiness into an otherwise, simple bag. I can pass this bag for USD1,000 and above but its USD348 price tag just makes it a must-have!

Ralph Lauren Stirrup Watch Collection

Ralph Lauren is the most recent big fashion designer who ventured into the world of high-end watches. It is indeed not exactly a big surprise seeing how well Chanel, Dior, Fendi, Gucci and Ferragamo have been doing with their watch collections over the years. And so, Ralph dived in too.

My favorite thing about Ralph Lauren is his ability to inject the classic American touch into something new and it becomes an instant classic. The Stirrup collection is, IMO, the most distinct among the three collections Ralph launched in his premier. This is simply due to its equestrian equipment shape, something Ralph Lauren (the brand) has always been closely associated with.

Contrary to the stigma that watches from fashion designers are just nice packaging with cheap off-the-rack ETA movement inside, Ralph Lauren watches run on either Piaget or Jaeger-LeCoultre house movements so it is really something worth looking into. Prices start from USD8,800.

First, buttery soft calfskin in striking colors with gold stamped Ralph Lauren logo, lined with suede with a zip compartment inside. Second, at USD495, I think they should make it mandatory for everyone and lastly, it is now on sale, down to USD349. The one in navy is definitely the safest choice but any of the other three would be the fun choice.

Wow!!! Ralph Lauren bags are getting way hot hot nowadays. While the Ricky might still be the most iconic (and expensive) Ralph Lauren bags out there now, the newbies are quickly racing up the charts of bag awesomeness. Look at this calfskin Boston bag for one! I am pretty sure i will be featuring more bags from Ralph for the next few entries. Anyway, Ralph bags do not come cheap in general. This baby is priced at USD2,995 but a bag like this lasts for years or even decades.

Ralph Lauren Stacked Glass Ball Table Lamp

Decorating home is a fun thing to do (and an expensive thing to do too), especially if you like fine things around. This nice lamp from Ralph Lauren is one of those classic pieces you will find in the American luxurious homes. I want it! But at USD1,700, it is just really out of my comfort zone to spend on a lamp. Nevertheless, I just spent more than I had thought I comfortably would on a dining set, coffee table and TV console so I might eventually get this Lauren piece quicker than I imagine. Just a thought for now…

Ralph Lauren St-Germain Store and Denim Python Hobo

Ralph Lauren set to conquer Europe by opening its largest and most luxurious European store in 173, boulevard Saint-Germain, Paris last week. The flagship store is the Ralph Lauren world where you could find anything the American classic mega brand makes, from watches to riding saddle, there is even a restaurant there. Above is the look of the Watch Salon in the store where the Ralph Lauren watches are available for your retail therapy.

I am also mesmerized by this beautiful python bag in denim color. The bag is priced at USD3,995.

Penelope Cruz with Ralph Lauren Dress and Clutch

I watch ‘NINE’ last week and have to agree that while Rob Marshall is still one of the greatest Hollywood’s Directors, he did not manage to come anywhere close to ‘CHICAGO’. The cast did deliver what they are expected to, especially Penelope Cruz who just owned the scenes. Penelope Cruz owned the night at the London Premier of ‘NINE’ in Ralph Lauren gown, paired with a gorgeous blue snakeskin clutch from the designer too. I think she scored nine out of nine here.
